A trailer for Avatar: The Way Of Water has finally burst onto the internet, after an exclusive run in cinemas, playing before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse Of Madness. It has been thirteen years since James Cameron released what would be the highest grossing movie of all time back in 2009, and there is a lot of curiosity on whether the coveted director can catch lightning in a bottle for a second time.

That could well be the case after getting eyes on our first official look. The trailer serves mostly as a tone-setter, but doesn’t shy away from revelling in the epicness of it all. With some operatic organs giving us a tease of Simon Franglen’s score, we are treated to a number of blue-hued vistas, delivering on the promise of the sequel’s aquatic settings.

The trailer doesn’t give much away in terms of plot, but from the official synopsis, we know that The Way Of Water will pick up over a decade after the events of the first film, where Jake Sully and Ney’tiri have formed a family. But of course, a supposed “ancient threat” is back to cause all sorts of trouble, and we get a brief peek at what looks like the resurfaced RDA — A.K.A the humans. This will send Jake on a quest to unite the Na’Vi clans of Pandora to take the fight back to the humans.

Part of the original Avatar’s success is in its technical prowess, and that is clearly at the forefront once more. It seems unlikely that The Way Of Water will have quite the same level of cultural impact, as CGI characters are a dime a dozen these days. However, the 97 second trailer doesn’t hold back, with impeccable detail to skin and dynamic lighting, and some frankly awesome images showcasing why audiences lost themselves in Pandora in the first place.

On a personal note, witnessing the floating mountains and seeing these characters on the big screen for the first time in over a decade was nothing short of spectacular. Cameron is one of the few directors out there to truly understand the magic of the cinema. The Way Of Water will likely be the first real reason to go to IMAX and dust off those old 3D specs since 2009.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

The film stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement and Kate Winslet.

Avatar: The Way Of Water will arrive in cinemas worldwide on December 16, 2022.
